Analysis of what i mean in regards to helper or distraction:

A helper being the person who spurs and assists you on. A distraction being the person who may actually pull you down or take you away from the things that are important to you in life.

He bugs me all the time to do something with my talents.  He would never try to steer me away from anything he knows I do well.

No real partner in my life now (just dating) but even the people that I have dated have been pretty supportive.

I get the most support from my best friend.  He always encourages me to pursue my dreams and I do the same with him.

I think a "real" friend/partner will be a support to you....that to me indicates that they really care.

Definitely a helper. If they truly love you then that is what you should do for each other.
