  1. The other answer really only works for babies up to 5 months.  A one year old is a different story.  12-24 months is a big range, so depending on how many months your niece is and if she is walking will make a difference in what she wants to do.  Also, 1 year olds cry a lot, because they know no other way of communicating, but they are easily distracted and consoled...usually.  Any one year will usually enjoy playing with balls, going outside, blowing bubbles or trying to catch them when you blow them.  They also love board books with lots of pictures of animals and babies, or touch and feel books.

If she is closer to 18 months, she will probably love to color on a pad with your help, of course.  Sidewalk chalk is also really fun if they are closer to that age.  Stackable toys are good, and always snacks like peaches, bananas, goldfish or crackers.  No apples, hot dogs or marshmallows...extreme choking hazard.  When she crys don't worry, she will stop, just comfort her and try to focus her attention on something else.  One year olds are a lot of work and into everything, so keep a close eye.  They are also really fun!!  You will be just fine.

  2. generally a baby cries because they either are wet or dirty and need a new diaper, they are hungry, they want a pacifier, are scared, bored, or want to be held.

Try the diaper first, if it's clean then move to the bottle and pacifier. If that doesn't work just try walking around with her close to your body, walk in a rhythm, or almost a light airy dance so she feels as though she is being rocked...or if you have a rocking chair try that. You can try softly singing to her, or give her some kind of toy that is bright, or makes noise. Babies love key rings, but you have to watch them carefully so they don't put the keys in their mouth..or any other o*****e.
