  1. To make her eat her food - grate the apples and carrots so she has to eat the rest of the food to eat them. I'm surprised the vet has prescribed pills, this is unusual, usually its a powder. Anyway, you could also crumble up polo mints in her feed. Does she need a wormer? If she rears I would wait until your friend is back, it's only a week and it won't hurt her. Though I have to say, if she has stitches in her eyelid she really should be stabled overnight. This will need bathing or it will get infected. As for the drops, just put her headcollar on and gently approach her eye, then swiftly put the drops in. Be smooth in your approach or you'll scare her. Is there no one more experienced on the yeard to help with this?

    Feel free to email me,

  2. crush the pills to dust with a pair of spoons or  in a plastic baggie with a hammer, tapping lightly.   Mix the dust with Molases then into her food.  That usually does the trick, and you can get a bottle of it at the grocery store where they keep the syrup for pancakes.

Drops are a pain in the butt.. if she left you the name of the vet. call and explain your problem and that you cant get the drops in.  See if he can give you a ointment or other type of medication.  And explain a easier way of giving it for you.

  3. i used to get this problem with my horse whenever i had to give him medication. He gets very excitable and i have to watch what i give him, due to him being an ex race horse. He can be a nutter. I used to mix up a small amount of sugar beet, i'm sure there is one that you can get with reduced sugar, can't really remember. I used either that cos its wet, the pills, when crushed, stick to it and due to the sweet taste, they don't really notice. i know its not nice, but i sometimes mixed it with water into a paste and used a syringe but if the horse rears, it's probably not a great idea.

  4. What I would do is walk my horse around for about an hour before feeding time. Then, she might calm down and enjoy the walk and she might be happier if she has something to do. It's all right if you leave her in her stall all night. Once her eyelid is better then she won't have to take the pills and eyedrops and she won't be as crazy. Just have patience and walk her for a while on a trail where there aren't many distractions or in a field. And for the pills you could get molasses from a feed store since horse molasses is different from our stuff. Good luck!

  5. Try putting the pills in enough water for the pills to soak up the water.  Then mix the pills with applesauce.  You can either put the applesauce in a de-worming tube, or mix it with a small amount of feed.

My horse had to take 24 pills a day when he was ill and we did this with a de-worming tube.  He isn't weird about de-worming like your friend's horse, though.

If this doesn't work, you may have to twitch her and use the tube to administer the applesauce mixture.

  6. You didn't say how long it was going to be before  your friend returns...does your friend (knowing his/her horse better than anyone) have any ideas on how to accomplish your tasks?  The pills are easy, crush them, mix them in anything that will taste good when mixed with the horse feed, put them on top, not on the bottom of the feed.  Also, with the eye drops...ask if the owner has any ideas on that and maybe the owner will cut their trip short (I know that I would) to make sure that their horse gets medicated properly.  If you own a twitch, it would probably be a good, safe and effective way to get those drops in her eye.  Good luck.

  7. I have a draftX rescue that will not take wormer in her mouth or a bit,  what i do is make alfalfa molasses balls wormer in the middle.  You can buy the blend in a bag.  Personally i hate the smell but i use it to hide things in.  She gobbles them up.  Some horse dont eat carrots or apples or that horse is smarter than you think and knows what you did. LOL

When putting the medication in the eye dont just go for the eye with the stuff.  Pet her, pet her face, ease her brain and then get the stuff in the eye.

  8. Midnight has the right idea with the eye drops and you do need to get them in.We have a bull headed horse that won't take meds. He was one that rears up  at the sight of a syringe. We crushed the pill and mix it with molasses.we put it in a 20cc syringe. We also cut the needle part off and made the hole bigger.Put the horse in a low part of our barn .Then with a quick easy insert in mouth and squirt in mouth its done.Yes we dance a few times  but he didn't not go up. ceiling too low.We did the same with the eye meds also

  9. The easiest way would be to put a lip chain on her and make her stand patiently while you doctor on her.  IF you don't know how to use a lip chain, then mix the pills with molasses (You can get this from your feed store, horse molasses is different than people molasses and you have to bring your own container.).

  10. Well do something for your friend. Take the horse to like an obedience class for horses. Then she might eat not so crazily.

  11. Yep mix it. You can use maple syrup too. As for the eye drops ...do you have a syringe without a needle? If you do you can use that because it doesnt have to be a certain direction to drop the meds in.

PS the meds are probably SMZ's try getting a small amount of very hot water and dissolving them then add syrup and mix with feed. It works better.
