My fiance just moved here permanetly about 4 months ago. And this is a new state for him and he is unfamiliar. I have been looking at local papers and have posted on Monster.com and various other sites. And still nothing. I have helped him making a resume and he has gone to agencies as well. Is there anything else that I can do to help him? Is it this bad to be able to fine a a decent job? He is trying to get into something new that could possible be a permenant job. We are trying to stay away from going to a fast food resturante. Any suggestions would gladly be appreciated.

  1. It is very hard to find jobs these days. The last interviewer I met with had received 75 applications, the one before that, 100. They narrowed it down to 15 and 10 people. It is so hard to compete with these numbers.

You are doing the right things by checking the papers and the Internet job sites. Agencies are a great idea, too.

Is he asking for a certain salary? That may be the problem. These employers do not want to pay much these days. I have a BA and I am seeing ads that require this and tons of experience and they are not paying well at all.

Does he have a cover letter? They are very important. It should be specific to each job, unless he goes to a job fair, in which case he can make a more generic one if he does not know what position he will be interested in. The cover letter and resume have to be perfect. I have had mine proofed and re-proofed by several people, so I know they are good, yet I am still struggling.

You could check out the larger companies in your area and see if they post openings on their websites. You also may want to check out your state's employment dept. to see if they have any jobs. If you Google the name of your state and "Job Exchange" you should come up with a site that gives you job listings for your area.

Have you tried Craigslist? You have to watch the scammers because they are ALL over there. But there are real jobs. Avoid the ones with gmail addresses because most are fake. Look for ones that have a specific town mentioned. Avoid those with links inside or ones with really weird salary ranges, like $30,000 to 100,000. If you weed through them, you may find some that are of interest.

GOOD LUCK! Remember, sometimes you can do everything right and it is not your fault. The market is really bad now.

  2. His best bet would be to go on every job website and put his CV on it and also make a cv and hand it into various shops. Although fast food restruants aren't ideal they are actually more chance of finding a job through. He could always apply for a job there and then still look for a job
