Question:

Helping High Schoolers Go Green?

I know Earth Day was yesterday. This seems like a really important issue and i want to make difference in my school. So i was hoping people would have some suggestions for me. One of the issues i have with going green is the fact that where i live there isn't a recycling plant anywhere in the whole state so what i wanted to ask is that does anyone know how to get high schoolers more involved in going green? Or ways we can go green?

  1. Most high schoolers only think about getting dates and that stuff so try to relate to it. say to the guys that alot of girls dig guys who care about the environment. also tell everyone that picking up trash around your comunity is great excercie and can help you loose weight or get hot abs. i am in 8th grade and i also want to help make my comunity greener. im glad to see atleast some people other than me care.

  3. First convince them America sucks and is killing the planet.  Then scare the c**p out of them by telling them they are all going to die with in 10 years if they don't convince thier parents to do something.  Then show pictures of polar bears trapped on small pieces of ice.  Tell them the polar Bear's future is in there hands.  Punish those who do not believe you by calling them stupid and giving them bad grades.

  4. I am trying to do the same thing too !! :]

it is weird that there is norecycling place in your state. I think you should try and contact the city of your state and tell them or make a request to.

  5. Wow I'm sorry you can recycle! Maybe you should try to do something about that?! I know that a lot of girls use hairspray for their hair. well if you know anybody that does make sure you tell them to switch to hair Gel because most hairsprays are bad for the ozone!!! One hair spray i know that is ozone friendly is Aussie ( you know the one with the purple kangaroo?) Do some gardening! Maybe invite friends to garden, I know it sounds cheesy but you never know some people might enjoy them selves!

Tell people that when they go shopping to get their own bag to use to shop everywhere instead of using the bags the stores give you. If you do use store bags SAVE THEM you could use plastic bags over and over ( if they don't get ripped) Like for a bag for swim stuff, a dog bag for on walks, LUNCH bags ?

Also since your state doesn't  recycle , do some recycling of your own! Use plastic bottles over and over again, just take the wrapper off!( you know like Minuet maid bottles, or gatoraid?)

( use those new light bulbs!)

You could even make ART out of PLASTIC RECYCLABLES!!! ( tell your art teacher!)

Also if you celebrate Halloween you could make decorations out of those plastic milk jugs! ( like skeletons!)

Things involving animals! If you have a nature preserve near you DONATE $$$$$!! ( if you can...) Maybe get a bird house feed the birds, ( bird feeder) Hummingbird feeder? (depends on where you live)

Talk to a teacher you think will care and explain your concern, maybe they could replace their old lesson plan with a lesson on going green and on why we need to save Earth!

    Hoped that helped!!

    GOOD LUCK

  6. I taught a great lesson to third graders on earth day and got the history, the no child left inside program and lots of neat info from the Department of Environmental Protection -- DEP - from my state which has a full page just for Earth Day with lots of links for teachers etc...- CT..other states must have one too though ..also, yesterday Hartford's Courant newspaper was used in literacy block  as well since they had a feature on "green packaging" of Campbells chicken noodle soup and the savings to the environment  if you purchase condensed soup which uses less metal...the highlight for the kids was reading int he sports section about the Mets, Red Sox and yankess plans to make their parks "green" then they worked with their families to track what they are doing and what more they could be doing to recycle/reuse.....lastly, many classes visit the recycling center and trash museum in Hartford CT....perhaps they could be helpful to you

  7. First of all, what state do you live in? That is very unusual that there is no recycling in the whole state. Chances are that there is recycling in your state, but it is either a privite business, or is all done at one big plant in a big city where no one usually puts the effort in to go to for recycling. Try researching on a search engine "recycling plants in [your state]"

  8. There are many ways high schools and their students can go green. Forming a "green" club is a good place to start. The club can encourage teachers and students to turn off their computers during lunch or when they are not using them to save money and limit emissions. The club can also plant trees around the school and pick up trash.

Another good idea would be printing a newsletter every month (preferably on recycled paper) and having teachers give a copy to each student. The newsletter can contain tips on how you can go green at home, like turning off lights, using natural products, gas saving tips for the drivers, and other stuff like that.

    Good luck.
