Do you think that giving money to homeless individuals who beg really helps them, or does it encourage them to be lazy and not help themselves?

  1. Tough but great question! I deal with this often.  I struggled with  feeling used if I gave money and guilty if I didn't.  It was not until I realized I had to give up wanting to "know" the outcome of me choosing to give or not to give.  As if I get to say what should, could, will, might be the outcome of another as a result of my action? Who am I to conclude one who asks IS homeless? Are all persons at United Way homeless? More so, who am I to be so certain my giving to United Way helps another?  I had to simply give up wanting to predict the outcome of my choice to give or not give.  I mean really it ONLY matters if you try on asking yourself what Money MEANS to you......(power, hardwork, accomplished, deserving etc.,) Then letting go of whatever you make Money mean to you and just get the reality...........Money is PAPER!

  3. People are not going to like this, but--

never subsidize something you don't want more of.

I never give money to beggars.  This just leads to more beggars.

  4. Charity does no good. Fighting the symptoms of a cold/Flu does not cure the cold/Flu, it just prolongs it.

The attitude that the homeless are lazy and social scum is highly foolish also though. They are simply products of their environment and and obvious symptom of social ills. They are the direct product of capitalism. Whilst a man has no guaranteed employment and must self himself piecemeal hour by hour, he has no security.

    Giving money doesn't help

Not giving money to the "scum of society" doesn't help either

Acknowledging the sources of this social ill and fighting to correct them does!

  5. it could be better to make the homeless do some work in return for money. It could even be useless work like singing songs. Otherwise the cunning people get the money and the really needy remain hungry. Or offer them food and confirm they eat it.

  6. Hello ihop,

the answer for me is that they have to be taken individually. I met a Vet who is partially blind, homeless and in a wheelchair.

I gave him all the food and money I could.

Anyone willing to protect our Country should never be on the street.

But for the Grace of God

  7. its best to give them food instead because they could save the money for drugs
