  1. It is not that I am against helping children with learning disabilities. But, I think it is more important for schools to emphasize gifted and talented. These children are the future leaders of our country.

  2. My son has a learning disability. He is very intelligent, but he has trouble taking in information in a lecture environment (which is basically what school is). However, if he is able to learn "hands on" or by seeing examples, he excels. I think it's very important to understand the individual child's learning style and teach them in that manner as much as possible. Talk to your child's teacher to see if he/she qualifies for an IEP. This worked WONDERS for my son. Most of all though, our schools need teachers who still CARE and unfortunately I think some of them have lost that feeling. And one more thing, if you feel your child isn't getting the education he/she deserves don't just sit there. Keep talking to the educators until someone takes you seriously.

  3. It depends on what they struggle with. First you have to know the student's strengths and weaknesses.

Accomodate their needs by using their strengths. Motivate them through their interests. Ask the child what he/she likes/dislikes.

    For example:

The child struggles with directions given verbally.  Have directions written out to the child with pictures to make the child understand better. Break the directions down for the student or explain it it easier terms to make him/her understand.

    Instruction:

    Multiple Intelligences

    -Explain in easier terms

    -Provide pictures

-demonstrate what they need to do

-use video clips for further understanding

-involve the student to demonstrate for the class

    -give specific steps

    -give them strategies/skills for tests/notes

    (graphic organizers)

Try anything you can to get students with LD involved.

  4. Good luck with that. Most parents fight like crazy to no avail because there is no enforcement to make schools follow FEDERAL laws to help children with learning problems.

I dont know why people in the education profession are EXEMPT from prosecution for violating FEDERAL laws.

AND, they are hurting OUR CHILDREN when they violate these laws.

Everyone else in the USA gets prison time for this, but not the people that we trust our children to, not the people who we PAY THEIR PAYCHECKS

  5. the child should have an IEP (individual education plan) discuss this with your child's slp, psyc, ot, aud, principal, and teachers, etc
