  1. Churches mostly have taken on this task, I do know that each

church usually have a missionary outreach department that

could be abroad or domestic. The Catholic Church seems

to be the leader concerning Missions abroad.

Concerning age, I have seen inner-city youth groups function

in all aspects of service like; Food Distribution,Food Drives,

Clothes Closets,Winter Shelter Services,Tutoring and After

School Programs. All programs are accompanied and Super-

vised by Adults. In Helping People in other Countries, I think

the minimum requirement would be 18, I am not sure about

the age requirement for Peace Corps and these youth are

usually connected with a church or agency.

Organizations: United Way, Boys and Girls Club,Big Brother,

Big Sisters,Volunteers of America,Salvation Army also the

.U.S. Government has programs for Students, The

Local County Office under Human Assistance Programs.

Resources: Local Library or County Human Assistance Office keeps a Directory of Agencies that offer Services.

  3. There are poor kids right in your home town. Give locally, try the red cross if your serious. You can be of any age to give to kids. Ask a teacher, they will think you are a nobel person and tell you how you can really help. Hospitals are great for helping people too...

  4. Organizations that don't charge fees for volunteering, such as VSO Canada, UN Volunteers and the PeaceCorps are looking for people who can work (read, write and speak) in a language other than English, who have skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families, improving children's health, etc., or that can lead to the transformation of key institutions, such as government, universities/schools or NGOs. They are looking for people who can commit to a two-year assignment, who have experience working with under-served communities, or who have a lot of experience in very diverse or religiously-conservative communities. The average age of volunteers in these organizations is over 30 (for UNVs, it's 38) and most not only have degrees, they also have grad degrees.

The goal is to give local people jobs and to keep money local, not to give Westerners a feel-good vacation -- hence why short-term placement agencies charge volunteers, or require these volunteers to pay their own way (flights, in-country transportation, health insurance, accommodation, food, security, translators, training, staff to supervise and support them in their service, liaisons with the police and local officials, etc.).

Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations, and how you can gain that experience locally. http://www.coyotecommunications.com/volu...

There is a listing of the more-than-30 member organizations of the International Volunteers Program Association (IVPA) that is a good place to find reputable volunteer-for-a-fee programs -- programs where you don't need to have much experience in order to participate, and the placements are just for a few weeks or months:

The cheapest overseas volunteer-sending organization in the USA that will send unskilled volunteers for short-term assignments (six months or less) that I've found is SCI - Service Civil International (http://www.sci-ivs.org/). I know *nothing* about them other than what's on their web site, so please don't consider the listing of this organization in my answer as an endorsement.

  5. This Disaster is not only Beautiful but dangerous also. Greatest ever help to them (I don't address them as 'poor') will be 'not to call them poor' but help them unconditionally. You, the richest in this whole world are poorer than them because your mind is a bankrupt of good feelings as you consider anyone poor. A day will come when you will realise this. Be Happy.

  6. The organizations that help poor by going to different country are called NGO's - Non-governmental Organizations.

The different types - some are based on religious precepts like the Catholic Relief Organization, some are huge and multi-national like Care, some only focus on one country like the Ninash Foundation in India, some only focus on one type of assistance like food security, medical attention, or education.

Usually you have to be at least 18 to work for one.
