Regular flakes are not the best foods for goldies.  They need a well balanced high protein low fat diet.

You can add many things to their diet from green veggies (all kinds), watermellons, oranges, carrots, pumpkin, worms of all kinds, chicken livers cut up, beef, brine shrimp, red peppers.

If you are using flaked foods, be sure the protein levels are high, the fat is low and there is very little "filler"

It is possible, because since flakes float on the surface of the water, they take in excess air in their stomachs and this causes bloating and swim bladder problems. Some people will suggest soaking the flakes or pellets for a few secs or push them down to stop this.

Goldfish do not have stomachs like other fish.  They need special food.  This is why they have goldfish food.  It is possible that feeding them tropical flake fish food over a very long time (ie; years) might shorten their life because these foods are forumated for fish with stomachs.  You can safely feed your fish any type of food that is specifically made for goldfish.  Don't worry about feeding them the flakes if they are made for goldfish.

No, it doesnt shorten their lives.. Unless you have flakes that dont have the ingredients listed at all? Then that would be a concern.

But yeah.. Goldfish Flakes are especially made for goldfish.. So i doubt it will shorten its life.

You can get some pellets to feed your goldfish a couple times a week..

who give you this info?  its okay to feed them flakes however if you like the natural food then grow some algae outside to feed your goldfish.

I heard that when you feed goldfish flake food they have to come to the top and gulp at the water this means they swallow air which causes bladder problems. Pellets are better, that's what i heard a while ago off a fish website.

Well, I have 4 goldfish and I have been feeding them pellets ever since I got them. I have never heard that goldfish flakes can shorten a goldfish's life though. I highly doubt it.

Just feed your goldfish pellets just to stay on the safe side. Pellets are good for the fish and it keeps the tank cleaner! Hope this info helped!
