Henao Montoya signs with British team Sky for two years – Cycling News
Sergio Luis Henao Montoya who is currently leading the Tour of Utah general classifications with a total time of 8:17:11 has signed the new season with Team Sky. Starting from 2012 the Columbian cyclist will remain with the new team for a period of two years.
On signing the new contract Henao shared his thoughts as he said, “This is my first professional contract but I raced some races in Europe before so it is not my first contact with professional cycling over there. I did the Vuelta in Madrid in 2008.”
Competition at the Tour of Utah has been tougher this year because organisers have invited Pro Teams after it has been upgraded to UCI 2.1 status. Teams like Radio Shack, Garmin-Cervelo, HTC-Highroad, BMC Racing and Liquigas Cannondale are making the competition
as hard and exciting as any other mega Tour.
David Brailsford who is the director of British Cycling performance is the man responsible for managing the team Sky operations. Team was announced in 2009 and they started competing in January 2010 with their head office in Manchester, United Kingdom. BSkyB
is the main sponsor behind the team until 2013 as Team Sky aims to win the Mega Tour de France within 5 years.
Henao had won one of the toughest races in the world, Vuelta a Columbia last year including the 2 kilometre opening stage at the Tour of Utah as he finished the stage in 4:05:820 defeating Francisco Mancebo by 1:960 as his team-mate Oscar Sevilla was at
the third position.
Cyclist was talking to the media when he told that team Sky manager was interested in signing a deal to which he has agreed as he stated, “Yes, I signed a contract for two years with Sky, The team manager and I were talking. He called to tell me that Sky
wanted to hire me for two seasons. I am very happy with this contract because Sky is such a big team.”
Sergio is currently holding the yellow jersey and is hopeful to continue the performance in the Tour of Utah and is looking good as the general classifications contender. Sergio is considered as one of the best climbers in the sport and mountainous terrains
of Utah favours someone like him.
