Hendra Mulyono says Indian youngsters need to improve on physical and tactical aspects of badminton
Indonesia’s former player Hendra Mulyono, who is now a coach, said that India’s youngsters need to work hard on both the physical and tactical aspects of their game if they want to become top class shuttlers in the world of badminton.
Hendra, who left playing competitive badminton and adopted coaching as his profession, has been recently hired by the Uttar Pradesh Badminton Association to train young shuttlers at Uttar Pradesh Badminton Academy (UPBA) in Lucknow, India.
The coach has been observing the talent while watching youngsters in action in the last week’s 36th Junior National Badminton Championship in Jaipur.
After the tournament, Hendra came to the conclusion that India has got immense talent but the shuttlers need to improve in certain areas of their game in order to meet the international standards.
Hendra will be guiding the trainees at the academy and will also train the emerging players in training camps at UPBA. The academy has got paramount importance as the Badminton Association of India (BAI) also wants UPBA to serve as a training centre for the junior players.
While talking about the talent and grooming of Indian junior players, Hendrawan said that there are talented shuttlers but they need to make further improvements in physical and tactical aspects.
The coach said, “There is talent aplenty in India. The only area where the youngsters lack most is the physical aspect. They need to become physically more fitter. As far as the technical aspect is concerned, some players are good while in some improvement is needed in defence. They also need to be faster.”
Nishant Sinha, the joint secretary of UP Badminton Association, said that players will improve under the supervision of Indonesian coach as Indonesia is one of the best badminton nations in the world.
Sinha said, “In 2011, Hendra had coached the Philippines national team. Another foreign coach will also be joining the Academy. I am sure the shuttlers will benefit from their skill,” he added.”
Hiring an Indonesian coach is a good move by the governing body of badminton in Uttar Pradesh as it will produce top class shuttlers which will represent the country at international level.
