Henrik Lundqvist blocks all 29 as New York Rangers shutout Philadelphia Flyers -NHL Match Update
It was the first meeting of one of the biggest rivalries in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as New York and Philadelphia fought for dominance, but it was Henrik Lundqvist who blocked all 29 as the Rangers shutout the Flyers, 2-0,
Saturday night, November 26, 2011, at the sold-out Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, United States.
The rivalry certainly did not start without a band as Philadelphia’s, Zac Rinaldo, and New York’s, Brandon Prust, broke out in a fight only four seconds into the contest and were awarded a five-minute major for fighting.
Prust was involved in another fight a little over midway through, but this time against Wayne Simmonds, giving both players another major.
"He does it for us all the time," Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said of Prust. "He's not the biggest guy. Pound for pound, he has to be one of the toughest guys in the League."
Brad Richards scored the opening goal 54 seconds into the second period during their power play opportunity as Andrej Meszaros’ penalty in the final moments of the initial period carried over into the third.
Carl Hagelin fired off their second with 15 minutes left to go in the third and final period of regulation to give them the match insurance goal as the Philadelphia Flyers failed to score any goal after that.
"I feel like we really shut them down. I think we played with a lot of confidence and we made it really tough for them to create chances," Lundqvist added. "We did a really good job and I think we carried over the confidence from yesterday's win over the
Capitals."
New York Rangers head coach, John Tortorella, was thrilled with his teams’ performance, which certainly showed when he was asked after the match.
"I thought we brought our energy to another level today," he said. "I thought we played really well away from the puck."
New York has the next matchup at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins while the Flyers will continue their four-game road trip against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, December 2, 2011.
