Henrik Stenson surges into first round lead at BMW International Open
Henrik Stenson smashed a score of 8-under-par, 64 in the opening round of the €2,000,000 BMW International Open to surge into an early lead. The European Tour event is taking part at the par-72 Golf club München Eichenried in Munich,
Germany.
The Swede teed-off from the front and set the course on fire with his flawless iron play. The veteran birdied the opening hole from a distance of 5 feet and managed to earn applause from the crowd. Proceeding towards the next holes,
the player clipped another birdie before adding a glorious eagle to his scorecard.
The crowd went wild when they saw Stenson roll a 25-feet long eagle from outside the green. Serenading the course with the sound of clapping, the crowd followed the Swede to the ninth green, where he anchored another point to his
scorecard.
Fighting against the torrential afternoon downpour, the veteran marched towards the back and managed to clamp four more birdies, a feat that pushed him to the top of the leaderboard.
Stenson, who was ranked fourth two years ago, currently resides outside the Top 130 players on the Official World Golf Rankings. The reason of his slump can largely be attributed to injuries. Even at this year's US Open, Stenson had
bandage wrapped around his fingers.
Despite that, the veteran gave a superb performance and walked to the clubhouse with a big smile on his face.
When asked to comment on his game, Stenson said, “I played a lot better last week. My confidence is still not as high as it can be, but I'm working away trying to do the things that are going to lead me back.”
The Swede added, “I don't think you will find a player who's been out here ten to 15 years who has not had some rough times. We all go through ups and downs. I've been struggling with my game a little bit, but it's hard to put my
finger on what it's been.”
Trailing Stenson by one stroke after the first round was Gary Boyd with his 65. A total of four players were tied for third place at 66, including Jbe Kruger, Paul Lawrie, Tim Sluiter and Danny Willett.
