They're one of the scoring leaders in both regular season and playoffs. Why were they drafted so low, when they're amazing hockey players?

  1. They are legends.

    wings 08'

  2. I wondered that since both came in but i think its because they weren't really well recongized as these other kids who were drafted number 1 like Crosby, Ovchkin and Kane but it shows you , you don't have to be drafted number 1 to be Number 1!

  3. Yes, Haakon Andersson is brilliant. There is no other way to describe his foresight. He sees talent deeper into the draft than any other scout. His relationship with Holland should also be credited. The trust Holland has in Andersson is obviously 100%.

The trend of "taking a chance with an unproven European" is here to stay!

  4. Its a process the Wings have. They draft raw talent and develop it into a style that fits their system. They have one of the most thorough Scouting Staffs in the league, not just here in North America, but in Europe as well.  Most of their players are low draft picks and are developed to play in their system. Detroit just doesnt throw out their talent on to the ice and say.. learn. Most of their players spend more time in the AHL and farm system than any other team, preparing them for what they will have to do in the DET system. It seems to work. They also take players that other teams have given up on (Cleary) and developed them also. They dont have the luxury of drafting players high in the 1st round and havent had that for many years. So they set a system in place to get around not having the top players in the draft on their team.

  5. Most consider it to be because of their size.

They are both under 6 feet tall and were very skinny when they were drafted.  They were told that unless they put on a lot of weight, the NHL would be too rough for them.

  6. Detroit got lucky with them, plain and simple.

  7. alot of teams were afraid to draft european players. they preffered the size and strength of the North American game to the speed and flash of the European game.

  8. Haakon Andersson. The name says it all.

Hudler's been in the system for years. This was his first full year as a Red Wing. Again, Nips nailed it.

  9. Just a guess that nobody knew they'd be this good.
