Henrik Zetterberg could be the captain of Detroit Red Wings after Nicklas Lidstrom retired
Nicklas Lidstrom of Sweden, a defenseman and a legendary player who defended Detroit Red Wings brilliantly always and saved them so many times, always leading them from the front.
He never let Detroit feel need for a captain of a blue liner until he was there and served them for a very long period of time, that was more than 20 years. He also lead them to Stanley Cup win In 2008 and was part of Stanley Cup winning team on four occasions.
Now since he has left the game and taken retirement, Red Wings are looking for a new captain and one of the players who is among contenders is Henrik Zetterberg.
Zetterberg, who will turn 32 in the October of 2012, is a very experienced player and has been playing for a while now. This is something that makes him eligible for the post and his performances have also been well like Lidstrom.
Also from Sweden like Lidstrom, Zetterberg himself is not sure if he would be appointed captain or not as he told reporters that they should wait few more weeks to know about the final announcement and the outcome.
According to him he would be very happy and obliged if he would be given that responsibility and he would accept it with pride, considering the history of Detroit Red Wings and their past, as he said on Tuesday while talking to reporters at Troy Sports Center
in suburban Detroit
"We'll see what happens the next few weeks. If they ask, I will be honored. It's something that you always hope you'd have a chance to do in your career, especially with a team like this in a city like this, with the past and the ownership and the history
we have. It would be a true honor."
But according to goalie Jimmy Howard, Zetterberg is not the only contender as he said,
"There's a lot of guys that can be captain on our team because there's a lot of great leadership in the room when you start talking about (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8466149 and http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8468509 and (Zetterberg)”.
