Henrik Zetterberg scores overtime winner as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Phoenix Coyotes
Detroit Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg was the hero getting the goal in overtime to lift the Wings past the Phoenix Coyotes by a score of 3-2, in the NHL's only action on Monday, 8 November.
How it happened
Detroit opened the scoring just 1:40 into the game when Danny Cleary had a wide open net to shoot at after Brian Rafalski's point shot came back off the end boards.
The Coyotes tied it up with just under a minute to go in the first period with an eerily similar goal to Detroit's. This time it was Martin Hanzal who fired the puck home after Derek Morris' shot came
back off the end boards.
The Coyotes went ahead with the only goal of the second period when Keith Yandle fired a hard shot after Lauri Korpikoski fanned on his attempt. Jimmy Howard was fooled by Korpikoski's mistake giving Yandle
a wide open net to shoot at.
It was Niklas Lidstrom who got the tying goal for Detroit in the third period with a well aimed point shot through traffic that snuck past Ilya Bryzgalov in the Phoenix net.
Zetterberg got the winner just 1:23 into overtime on a delayed penalty. Zetterberg did well to work the puck behind the net before getting it out to the point. Zetterberg was back in the play when Ruslan
Salei fired the puck towards the net for Zetterberg to tip home.
What they're saying
"We know this game is a tough one, both in the legs and mentally," Zetterberg said after the game. "We knew it was not going to be a beautiful win if we were going to get the 'W'. It was a pretty ugly
one. We're taking it and happy to get the day off tomorrow."
Phoenix head coach, Dave Tippett, although happy with the way his team worked hard, admitted that something was missing.

"We have a lot of guys playing very hard," he said. "But we need to make that extra play or take that one extra mistake out of our game that's been critical to us. Right now, it's that one situation that's
taking the game away from us. We're making some mistakes to beat ourselves."
The Coyotes have now lost three games in a row and are in last place in the Pacific Division. They get set to take on the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday, 10 November.
The Red Wings have won four of their last five games and are just one point back of the Central Division leading St. Louis Blues. Detroit continues their five-game home stand against the Edmonton Oilers
on Thursday night.
