Henry Ponsonby says First Mohican’s appearance at Ascot subject to ground – Horseracing news
Owner Henry Ponsonby has revealed that First Mohican’s appearance in the Ascot events will only be possible if the ground conditions are a bit soft compared to what they have been over the past weekend.
The young challenger is extremely talented, but an injury last year has really made him vulnerable under certain circumstances. Therefore, his camp remains cautious over running him in events, where the track demands more power from the runners.
According to Ponsonby, “If the thundery showers that are possible during the course of the week materialise and the ground is like it will be tomorrow he's a likely runner. If it went faster we'd probably wait.”
When asked about the injury to First Mohican, his owner replied, “I don't know what happened in the November Handicap - it's one racing's great mysteries. He was very sore after that race so maybe he got bashed about a bit. If he had run up to form I think
he'd be unbeaten and be five out of five. He's in seriously rude health and we know he's a very good horse.”
After his maiden victory in the sport, the five-year-old gelding proved that he meant business. He was not rated as the favourite to succeed in that event, but the bookies found out that it was a mistake not to give him the best odds.
As a result, the talented runner was awarded the best price in all of the next races he took part in. He has only been beaten once in his career, which shows that he is a tough nut to crack. He would have been victorious in that competition too, but an injury
prevented him from doing so.
First Mohican grew up under the supervision of trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who passed away recently due to cancer. He was simply one of the greatest of all time and trained thousands of stallions, who went onto win numerous Group 1 races.
Although no one will be able to replace the legendary trainer, yet his stallions are lined up for action in numerous major competitions. They are now being trained by Lady Cecil, who is doing a good job at the moment.
