If they (being the govt "they") want us to go without gas-guzzlers, why do they not make it more affordable to buy electric cars and such? They make electric toy cars, can't they do something for the rest of us who would love to avoid paying $5 per gallon?????

  1. It is not the Gov. that is the problem . It is the environmentalist that want us all to walk.

  2. the gov't doesn't sell cars.

and electric cars are more expensive to build.

or did you want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere when your battery runs out?

it would be entirely appropriate for the gov't to tax cars based on expected mileage.

however no politician is going to get elected, or reelected, proposing, or voting for, such.

and way too many people care for nothing but themselves, as evidenced by the number of people shopping at walmart, where the company policy is to force jobs to be transferred out of the US.

  3. its not the govt

we shud change our name to united oil dependency

thats wat controls the majority of everything because they control gas prices not the govt

buy a hybrid its not expensive

look at how many people drive hummers, escalades, mercedes, beamers, etc.

    prius is cheaper

    hybrids are cheaper

not the tahoe hybrid wats the point of that if u have three children or less you dont need an suv

    get a car!!

  4. There are tax incentives for buyers of hybrid cars, but they are capped after a certain number of vehicles per year are sold. The Detroit auto makers insisted on these caps because the Japanese auto makers are the main sellers of hybrids, and Detroit currently doesn't have any models on the road that compete head-to-head with the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid, so they wanted to limit the incentives for buyers to purchase these cars.

The government should expand the tax incentive on hybrids to include all hybrid sales and to cover at least the entire additional cost of the hybrid technology. Instead, they have written rules that allow tax deductions for purchasing SUVs over three tons even if not used for a true business purpose i.e., hauling tools and equipment. (See references.)

  5. these days the government seems to be controlled or at least influenced by the big corporations.

    It's all about greed

  6. Nope.

No matter what the government and conspiracy theorists wish for, we really don't have a practical alternative to liquid petroleum fuels at this point.  Gasoline holds an astounding amount of energy: compare the power in your cell phone battery with a shot-glass full of unleaded regular, and you'll get an idea of the difference.  Which one would blow up the room?

And so the answer is mass transit, trains, motorcycles, and perhaps trackless-trolley electric vehicles running on our present highway system.

  7. The US has proven reserves in Alaska, off the California coast, in the gulf are off Florida and off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina. We let special interest groups prohibit us from getting this oil and stopping our dependence OPEC, Mexico, and Venezuela. Why?

Because all the Eco-freaks feel it is getter for us to pay $4.00 a gallon pollute the oceans with carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide from mega tankers bringing oil to the US. They force these alternate energy bills through congress on us instead of seeing some red tailed nit-rat moved or their condo view spoiled by a temporary drilling rig. The US can become energy self sufficient in less than two years if we let the oil companies do their job. I hate to pay $4.00 a gallon for gas, who do you think will pay the oil companies taxes? The consumer of course, just like we pay their taxes now. Sure it cuts into their profit margin a little, but in the end the biggest company that get the most profit from a gallon of gas is the congress (Right now about 50 cents a gallon) and they spend that on bridges to nowhere.

Maybe Congress does not want us to drill in the United States they keep the groups who finance their campaigns. All those big powerful Eco lobbies and foreign oil companies that pay them a lot of cash to back them have a bigger say than the voting citizens’ who don’t write their congressman telling them to open up these reserves.

Alterative energy, Why don’t you look back to the 1970’s and see how much a gallon of gas jumped the last time congress thought they knew how to run a business.

Congress is at a 20% approval rating lower than even Prez Bush. The reason why is because they are letting these Eco-freaks try to limit big business in the name of climate change. They also don’t see a reason why you should not be happy paying $4.00 a gallon for gas just so some farmer can get a kickback growing corn for ethanol.

The key reason why US cars get such crappy mileage is because of all the environmental equipment we put on them. The safety standards for design and the clean air act all decrease the ability for these cars to get getter gas milage.

Also thanks to congress we have to deal with fuel that is "blended" they add stuff to it thinking it will be better for the environment. Remember MTB it was supposed to make the air cleaner. well it did just that....By polluting the groundwater.

Each time Government has tried to improve the gas mileage of cars by new standards/fuel types/emissions it has backfired and cost us taxpayers more money.

Write you congressman; tell them to stop talking about drugs in sports and start drilling for oil.

Just remember this. Pure gasoline breaks down into CO2, Water, and SO2, all able to be removed by nature. There is not enough space to list all the by products that "blended” gasoline has... most of them cannot be broken down by nature and the vast majority can cause physical harm/birth defects

  8. Well the problem is that "they" are currently a bunch of oil men (Bush, Cheney, etc.) who don't really want us to switch to alternative fuels.

You are essentially correct.  I was listening to an interview this morning where they said the current federal budget for alternative fuel and vehicle research is $3 billion per year, and experts think it needs to be $30-80 billion per year in order to make the rapid advances in these technological areas that scientists are calling for.

Basically we're not spending nearly enough money to fund research and development of alternative fuels.  That should begin to change with the next administration.

  9. Because the gov't is all about money... and a great deal of politicians either have stock in oil companies or get paid off by them.

I would like to see the hydrogen car become a common thing...of course they would have to set up different stations for those.

  10. Most of the poor milage results from designing cars that go very fast and accellerate quickly.  I don't think we need cars that go over 100 mph when there's nowhere that it's legal to drive that speed, but the American public demands them.  Likewise I don't think we really need to go from 0 to the speed of light in 7 seconds, but the Americal public demands it.  Advertisers have sold Americans on the idea of a car being an extension of the personality (if not the p***s) to the point where all the other considerations go by the wayside.

It isn't hard to limit the top speed of a car.  It wouldn't be hard to make them broadcast a signal to the cops when they go above a certain speed either.  Yes people could disconnect these things.  They can do that now with seatbelts, but they're still a good idea.

  11. Until last year, there was an energy tax credit for people that bought hybrid (gas/electric combo) cars.  Hopefully, more similar tax breaks will be available in the future.

  12. Electric cars can actually be more expensive.  When you run out of electricity, how would you recharge, how much would you need.  AND, how LONG would it take to recharge again?

  13. It is not so much the government as the car manufacturers AND the government. I believe that we do have the technology to make more gas efficient vehicles, and choose not to.

  14. Because it's not government's role to decide what we should and should not have.  That should be left up to the market, as we are a free enterprise nation.  If the market demands electric cars, the market will provide them.  Right now, the market does not demand them, so why would we mandate producing them?  I'm happy with my gas-burning car.  Until  enough people decide they want something else, it should stay the way it is without government interference.  Government only serves to limit innovation and unecessarily siphon out more money that drives free market economy.

  15. They are the ones making us pay! Fund the oil war so they can drain their own economy! Fuct up

  16. Do you understand what has to happen to make electricity? Burn coal, oil, etc. No smoke comes out of  the car but it does come out of a smoke stack somewhere...

Think Hybred... 41 MPG 411 miles per fill up...
