this summer i started working at abercrombie and fitch (i know it sux) and in three weeks i only worked once, they never scheduled me for any other times. but tomorrow is tax free weekend and I got a voice mail today at 8pm telling me to call in an hour ahead of time for a 5:00 shift. i'm assuming it's 5 in the morning but they never specified. i'm real fed up with this company and im going back to school in two weeks so i won't be working there after this summer. i also already had things to do tomm, so my question is should i call in or leave them hanging? should they have given me more notice?

  1. If you're on the west coast and the store is still open, you should call them now.  It isn't fair to the customers or the other employees to simply not show up.

Ask them if they meant 5 am or 5 pm, and ask how long your shift was scheduled to be.  And then, quite honestly, I would ask them if they were going to schedule additional hours during the next 2 weeks, or do they simply have too many employees for you to get any hours.

After they answered those questions, I would decide whether or not I would work tomorrow or whether I would tell them, "Thanks for calling, and I understand your situation, but you only scheduled me to work once this summer.  So I felt it was reasonable to assume that A&F had dropped me from the scheduling.  And now you're telling me that I won't be working after tomorrow either, which pretty much confirms it.  I'm sorry, but I can't work tomorrow, especially on such short notice."

Good luck with whatever you decide to tell them.

  2. I think you should go to work. You should learn to be responsible and most of all reliable regardless of the job and how much time you have left with them. Remember they are going to be situations in life that are not going to give you notices in advance.
