Here's a trick question. I asked this question once before and got a bunch of answers that didn't make sense. What is the average temperature of the Earth? Note that I clearly did NOT ask for the average temperature of the SURFACE of the Earth.

  1. Well Earth can range in temperature from 0C-7200C.....so i guess it would have to be about 3600C (approx)......

......but then you really have to take into account how much each layer of the earth takes up and then it gets more complicated.....so lets say its somewhere between 0 and 7200

    :)

  2. Trick questions require trick answers.

How do you want to calculate an average? An unweighted average by mass? In that case, the surface will be totally insignificant, because its mass is so low in relation to the mantle and core. Similarly, the atmosphere would be completely insignificant. If I had to take a very rough guess, I'd say about 1000 to 1500 degrees Celsius.

If you wanted to do this by volume, then the average would be *slightly* lower.

Any other way would not be a mathematical average at all.

  3. How did you get to ask yourself this question? I asked myself about the same question but with Mars instead of the Earth and I never got the right answer...
