  1. get a different job but tell me how do you survive on minimal wage?

  2. You are a commodity...you have worth, you have value for your services no matter what.  For your 8 years, you should have a skill in whatever you do.  Do something with it.

You may need to recognize that for 8 years of your life at min. wage, and yet you remain there...is the fault of your own...if you were a company, and had a worker that was willing to work min. wage for 8 years, wouldn't you keep them just as they are?

If you haven't gone up the ladder by this time, take your skills and find someone that will appreciate your worth.  I guarantee you, that they will find another that will work for the same rate as you without blinking or thought.

Trust in your ability...you have establish that you are in it for the long haul...that in itself is a good track record.  Do something with it!

  3. labour law differs in every state.

so maybe you can ask whether there are rules in your state about it, however i doubt it...

you have a contract which determines the conditions of your work..

if you feel you should be getting more for the work you are doing ask for a raise, that's what people usually do..

if you're not happy witht the answer you can search for another job... if you are being hired now after 8 years experience, if you find work in the same sector your value will already be more..(depending on the sector you work in ).  if you are good and in a way have an important role in you present post they will give you a rise... if you can be subsituted with anyone means it's not worth it for the employer to keep you with a rise..

you know your situation../ but usually ppl just ask

  4. You may have benefits where you are right now and you know your job, so best to work with what you have for now. These are your next steps.

    1. Get an idea of the next level position at your company and talk with some people in those areas to find out the skill levels and work they do. Go online to your company's website and see if they have jobs openings posted. Once you have an understanding of what other jobs are available at your company, you will need to discuss with your boss the opportunities to advance to a higher level position at your current company. What jobs is the next step up from your current position. See if you and your boss can set up development tasks for you to do so you can get to the next level in the company. You will need to have the ideas to take to your boss about your personal development plans.

    2. get more Education. You should look into the local community college for an associate's degree in a field that would be good for your career interests. Does your company offer tuition assistance? Does your company provide free company training to improve your skills to make you a more valuable employee?

    3. Finally, look elsewhere, send out your resume to other companies. Go to a temp help agency and see what they can offer for salary so you know your value in the marketplace.
