Any thoughts on some of these ideas?

ALSO-We know the obvious changes we'd like to make(Instigator, goalie trapezoid,Delay of game)is there another rule you would like changed that you always hated and nobody has ever brought up?

  1. They're are retarded ideas except for #2 (3 points for reg. win). The 92 foot wide rink is more likely to be a 100 foot "international" rink than 92, why not go all the way here guy? And he says reduce the schedule by 6 games but doesn't say how he would set it up. I would set it up 8 games vs Divisional teams and 2 against everyone else. 82 games.

Honestly, without being ridiculous, everything has been said. Even everything I can think up has been mentioned.

  2. 1.  I agree.  I like the idea of widening the rink, but not to the international size.

    2.  I don't like the idea of a three point win in regulation.  I think a win should be 2 points and a loss should get you nothing, no matter when it happens.

    3.  I don't like the idea of losing 6 games a season.  I know it seems like a small deal, but I would miss those 6 games.  I like the idea of getting rid of cheesy promotions and I'd like to further add, get rid of the cheerleaders.  They don't belong in hockey.  I've never had a problem with the music at hockey games, with the exception of Cotton Eye Joe.  I would like to hear more organ.

    4.  I agree that consistency would be nice, but I don't think it would do anything to slow whining on message boards.  I've seen whining over some of the dumbest things.  One fan will be saying there needs to be more consistency while another fan will be saying penalties shouldn't be called in overtime or late in the third period.  It's not only fans, but "journalists" get in on it, too.  I read an article from a Detroit paper after game five of the SCF saying that it's sad that a high sticking penalty was called that cost the Wings the game and he said that the refs should have looked the other way.

    5.  I agree about cutting ticket prices, but I don't think it will happen.

My own idea... have the NHL Network included with Center Ice.  This way Center Ice subscribers don't get blacked out by games that are on the NHL Network.  Center Ice is expensive.  People shouldn't have to pay for both.

  3. None of this c**p has any chance of seeing the light of day, save for maybe going to 3 points for a win (regulation).

The writer then goes after length of schedule, ticket prices, and making the rink wider.  Perhaps he should spent 10 minutes looking at a club's income statement and then go for a coffee with LITY.

Financially, you are not going to cut games off the schedule.  It will not happen.  Try getting the owners and the Players Association to sign off on that one.  Seriously.  You're not going to take out prime seats for the same reason.  That's hockey revenue; owners need it, and the NHLPA d**n sure doesn't want their pie made any smaller.

Ticket prices: in many markets, teams do not accurately sell their perishable inventory (seats) to the best they can.  In some markets, tickets are overpriced, and should be modified.  In others, they're underpriced.

I'd leave the delay of game penalty as is, but extend the glass up a couple feet (to account for the increase in curve on sticks) and run that to the benches.

I'd require incoming players to wear visors (same way helmets were done).

I'd also mandate that all penalties are served in full.

  4. Personally I don't agree with any of those ideas other than lowering ticket prices.  The refs are never consistent, and never will be.  There will still be bias, bad calls, and calls made to even up the game.

    I

don't agree with widening the arena.  This isn't the olympics, it's the NHL.  Widening NHL arenas would create problems in the minors, collegiate, prep, and every other level of North American hockey.  Either all arenas in North America change the regulation rink size, or North American players grow up playing in a different system with different plays designed for spatially restricted play.  This would put them at a disadvantage to international players.

I don't agree with shortening the season either, as we would not see enough interconference (not intra) play.

Also, I don't mind the current point system.  I enjoy watching a finesse team like my Wings go into a shootout.  It's exciting, and it's a part of the sport that would otherwise be all but extinct had it not been integrated into OT.

Changes I would make would include eliminating the trapezoid and instead enforcing obstruction behind the net that a lot of goaltenders milk (Marty Turco comes to mind).  If a goalie traps the puck along the boards or obstructs an opponent behind the net while playin the puck he should be penalized.

I would also get rid of the instigator rule if both players agree to drop the gloves.  This is the way men settle things.  There is a big difference between enforcing, a key element of the game, and "senseless violence" as some might refer to fighting.

I would also require that all penalties resulting in a disallowed goal be reviewed.  When Tomas Holmstrom is outside the crease and clearly 6 inches away from Marty Turco, a video goal camera is completely necessary so that douche bags like Dan O'Halloran can't f*ck the Red Wings over on 5 goaltender interference calls per season.

  5. these are just my opinions...

the rink size is fine as is.

i, personally, love a good shootout.  i think they're exciting.  maybe making the initial OT a 3 on 3 wouldn't be a bad idea.  that would be fun to watch too.

i don't hear the players whining about the length of the season, and certainly not the fans.  what's to gain by chopping off games??

the refs do need to be way more consistent.  i understand the players are tired by the end of the game and the refs let some stuff slide, but if you let it slide for one team, it has to slide for the other.  too many times you see a team get away with something then the other team gets nailed for the exact same thing.  but this happens in every sport.

    the last point is obvious.

there really isn't any rule that hasn't been bitched about by someone somewhere.  icing gets old but i don't know what you would do to change that.

  6. Greg Wyshynski is a jerk off.

#1:  Creating more space by taking out a row of seats……wtf?  Is he stupid or just slow?

#2:  Three points for winning a game would make it difficult for nerd like me to make comparative stats.  What’s wrong with bringing back the tie.  Game ends on time every night, and everybody goes home happy.

#3:  Reduce the schedule (why?) Get rid of free fan promotions (I like free stuff)  Turn down the music (Hey Edna…..your organ is too loud... turn it down.  Wft….all bad ideas.

#4  Making refs be consistent……how about fines.  If I do poor at my job, I lose money, and if I lose enough money, I go out of business.  I think NHL refs should get the same treatment…..if the NHL can review so many videoed bad calls…then the ref should lose his job

#4  Cut ticket prices for some home games and relocate failing franchises…I have no problem with ticket prices

The ONLY thing I agree with him on is relocating failing franchises.  What a numb nut.

Scott:  Thanks for the real scoop.....Wyshynski still sucks, imo.

Edit:  I forgot my own complaint.  I think some rinks should make the bench longer.  No room for the 2nd goaltender?  I would feel offended, lol.

  7. I have to say I have been following a lot of these blogs and I think this is the worst one ive seen....

First off, the rink size is fine.  It amazes me how people love the sport so much but will say something like this which would obviously change it.  Whats next, bring back the crease rule?  Or lets make the nets bigger?  Bite your tongue!

I think the OT system is working.  Atleast if you give the point after regulation the teams are playing for the win in OT.  There hasnt been any one team that was so phenomenol in the shootout that they went in lockdown every OT.  I would rather see a slower 3rd period (which is not usually true) and have a good OT period.  I think if we went back to any other system teams would just "lock down" a different part of the game and I dont want that to be the OT period....

82 games is fine....is 76 really going to help anything that much?  Your reasoning is flawed....o wait, he didnt even give any?  I wish he elaborated a bit so we could see why he wants to shorten the season by 6 games....and how this would help anything....who the F* wants less hockey?  Its the off season and we are dying here...yeah lets shorten it some more....

Consistent calling is a good point, but not an original one.  Out of the 15+ blogs up on yahoo with this 5 things I'd change idea its been put up over 10 times....get a new one

Ticket prices....see above....no sh*t we want to spend less money....is the sky blue?

My idea would be to let the goalies take part in a shootout.....that would be EPIC!

  8. I agree with lowering ticket prices, as do most fans.

With regards to the overtime situation I personally would like to see it the way it used to be, without the shootout.

I liked when the winning team got two points and the losing team got zero points, even for losing in overtime. And then if overtime ends in a tie then each team get a point.

    Ah...the old days.

A rule I'd like to see is that amateur golfers like Darcy Tucker should not be practicing his golf swing during a hockey game. Such offenders should receive a game misconduct.

  9. Homes these aren't Wysh's ideas.  All month he has allowed other media people to comment via his blog how they would change the NHL.  Really, these are one of the best 5 Ways columns yet.  Most of the time people tend to turn it into a joke or have unrealistic options.

I'll copy and paste my response to the blog into here:

    1) Hands down agree with a bigger rink. Big rink=faster play=cool

    2) Elimination of the OT loser point would do it for me. Stop reward teams for almost winning.

    3) I haven't really looked into a shorter season too much, but fewer games likely means more consistent play throughout the season so who could complain.

    4) That would be fabulous, along with rule reworks like instigator, etc. They reffing system (and the Olympic gymnastic system /stab) needs a rework badly.

    5) Yes please God(Bettman) move some teams. However, cutting ticket prices works against a couple of your other points. Are teams willing to lose sales revenue, tv revenue, advertising revenue, etc from the six games they lose cutting from 82 to 76 games? Are teams willing to absorb the loss of sales that removing a row of premium priced tickets per home game by widening the ice? Seemingly the answer is no and these changes in revenue would be passed down to the fan through increased ticket pricers.

Homes: Oh ya he does, but at least it gives me something to read during the day at work lol.
