Question:

Here is a dumb question but I'll ask anyway

I'm moving into a new apartment and the utilities included in the rent are heat and water. Does that mean I would have to get electricity (power) set up myself (pay for it separately)? All the other apartments I have lived in have included power in the rent, so I guess I'm new at this. (Oh, and I put this in the Etiquette column because I am frequently in this section and didn't know where else to put it).

  1. The best idea would be to ask the landlord or person that manages the apartment building.  They will not think this is a dumb question because these are the kinds of things prospective tenants ask about. But from the way it sounds, most likely, yes, you need to call your electric company and let them know when you're moving in and that you need  electricity.  They don't actually have to set anything up in your apartment.  They just start monitoring the usage and charging you.

  2. If electricity isn't explicitly stated as an included utility, you'll probably have to get it set up on your own (same goes for cable, internet, etc.). Your landlord should be familiar with both the local utility providers and the process for setting up service, so ask him what to do about this. If it turns out that power is included, he'll be able to tell you at that time.
