  1. The United Nations has Special military forces that can send to countries in war or civil war to maintain peace. The role of the UN is to send useless people to third word countries so they can  become rich by lying on the beach and stealing people's sheep. They also have the right to attack gangsteers even if it involve the extermination of  innocent people. In General the UN does not have power but the 1st world countries that are in it have the power.

  2. Rather than copy and paste from the web, click on the site below which goes through a summary of the UN.

As for damage it has caused, thanks to UN inaction (or rather action, but not enough), thousands were killed and raped in Bosnia. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/... Rwanda is another spectacular UN failure - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/afri...

  3. The United Nations promotes collective security.  The UN doesn't exist because it has power to force its will on the world's states, however it exist because states have to it serve their needs.  It only has as much power as given by the states that are involved in it.  The United Nations can not invalid a state's sovereignty.

  4. UN's power is not of the typical kind. It does not have much military might, and due to the charter giving the 5 permanent countries on the Security Council veto power not much gets done- due to opposing interests by US, China, Russia, France, UK. As a result, the main function of the council is to promote a forum for countries to air their grievances. It also forces countries to respond to their actions.

The International Court it runs barely does anything- around 5 cases a year I think- and attendence is optional. The cases usually deal with fishing disputes on international boundaries in the oceans.

The UN helps with refugee situations with some regularity, by sending peace keeping troops to help thousands of displaced people form a camp and stabalize.

Just check out the UN's website for more details on what they have accomplished, but their greatest contribution is giving all countries a voice to be heard by all the other countries- all though too often it falls upon deaf ears.
