Hermans tortoise or greek spur thighed tortoise?

what are any differences between these species?(NOT THE WAY THE LOOK) i mean in behaviour and keeping them in captivity.

WHICH KIND IS...

better for beginners?

easier to feed?

easier to handle?

easier to breed?

more capable of withstanding high and cool temperatures?

more capable of withstanding damp/high humidity?

cheaper?

longer lived?

tolerant of other tortoises?

active?

more commonly available as captive bred?(in the UK)

more commonly availabe?

etc etc etc

or are they just exactly the same?

  1. The Hermann's has the better reputation for a beginner's tortoise by a small margin. Their cares, etc. are pretty similar.

  2. they both require the same sort of husbandry an diet, only it is better to get a Herman if you have never had a tortoise, the spur thigh are great tortoises but if you get the diet and environment wrong they can be more prone to stress and illness, the Herman tend to be more active than the spur thigh often the spur thigh will go to their hut in the height of day as they do not like the heat as much as Herman's, they tend to be a lot quieter as well, you are more likely to get a Herman or horse field in Britain as they are more common, than spur thigh, but once you know what you are doing both tortoises are great to keep, neither one of these tortoises really like damp conditions, here is a great site that you can look at and see how to care for both these tortoises http://www.tortoisetrust.org/  it has some really useful articles as well so you will be able to see the pros and cons of both species and decide which one would suit you the best, best of luck honey
