Question:

Hermit crab cage layout?

I was just wondering if this is a good layout for hermit crabs.

(I have 3!)

12 gallon aquaruim

Small tree for climbing

3 extra shells

Small house

Food dish

Water dish with sponge

Forest mulch on the ground

Also, I change the water and food about every other day

With their crab cakes I give them some mashed up apple or bannanas (I read somewhere they like fruit) and they seem to like it

I mist them with this spray every other day, to keep their gills moist and to reduce stress

I take them out and let them walk around

Finally, I spray their cage with water to keep it moist and to mantain humuditity

Tips? Anything I can do different?

Thanks!

  1. Wow you got it really good. What kind of crab is it? Land hermit crabs come from warm tropical climates and therefore need a warm, humid environment to survive.

Despite their name hermits are quite social and are best kept in groups. So its good that you have 3. Forest Bedding is ground quite find so it is nearly like soil, so it is good for burrowing. So thats ok too.Hermit crabs are happiest kept at 72-80 F. Low wattage and/or special night light bulbs are a good option and many crab owners have found their crabs became more active with lighting. They need a relative humidity of around 70-80%. Since all species of hermit crabs should have access to both fresh and salt water you will need two water dishes. They should be big and deep enough to let the crabs get into them if they wish to soak (especially the slat water dish), but easy to get out of and not so deep that drowning is a risk.

So yeah those things are great but you probably know them.
