I have three hermit crabs. one of them just shed it's skin!! Is that good or bad? Then later that day, he took his shell off. I only have about 4-5 shells in there. I am getting more today. He's a smallish medium. I don't know what to do. where can i get shells? what sizes do i get?

Well, any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  1. It's normal for them to shed, like snakes.  Always keep several different sized shells for them, as sometimes they like to move a lot and other times they stay in the same "house" until they can't even fit anymore.  You can get more shells at a pet store, or you can search online for them.  Good luck!

  2. shedding their skin is normal it means their skin is too dead and neads to be replaced! as for the shells, it is normal too, hermit crabs really do change their shells once in a while. as for buying the shells you could buy in the pet shops or aquarium shops. buy a shell that is a LITTLE BIT bigger than the size of your hermit crab!

  3. Shedding their skin is very normal, it's called molting. They outgrew their exoskeleton. Is it still out of it's shell? or did it go into another one?

You can get shells at most petstore chains. I know petco sells them, that's where I used to buy mine. You should get an assortment of sizes (buy about 3 or 4 shells). Get one just a little bigger than the one it outgrew (sometimes they just need one bigger) and the rest just get a few larger and put them in tank. I had a crab once that would change it's shell every day. He was a funny little guy.

I would suggest keeping the tank/habitat as humid as possible while he is out of his shell, or else he may die.

If you have other hermit crabs, Isolate the one who isn't in the shell. Put him in a hospital tank with some shells. Keep it dark and humid and keep him in there for a few days after he goes back in his shell, just in case since he will be vulnerable.

    Good luck, hope this helped

  4. Yeah it's normal. When a hermit crab "sheds" it's molting. They are really sensitive during that time and it's best not to touch them. When they molt they the extra exoskeleton falls off and their body gets larger with each molt.

You want to find a shell with a similar shape opening to the shell he has, but slightly larger. I recommend 2-3 shells per crab at all times.

  5. sheding is very normily and if it comes out of its shell and not go in to another one then  it could be sick so try to find a shell for him to go in to

  6. him shedding an getting out of his shell is a good thing you have to go to the pet store an get shell that are bigger than him no smaller
