Question:

Hermit crabs burrowing- help!?

I got my hermit crabs- Stripe and Bob- yesterday, and my friend got 2 also. The second I put them in their crabitat, they burrowed straight down. I know this is normal for new crabs, but there is no evidence of their coming up during the night. Is something wrong?

  1. Nope they are just destressing - mine do the exact same thing and have been under for weeks.  They come up after awhile so no worries.

  2. Probably not. My boyfriend has had hermit crabs going on about 2 years now, and it's pretty common for them to bury themselves when they're in a new place. They might even be coming up at night, since that's when they're usually most active (eating and drinking and whatnot).

As a matter of fact, one of my bf's crabs died not too long ago (he had 2 as well) so he got a new 'friend' for the remaining one. It also buries itself often. They could also be getting ready to molt, which is a good thing because that's how they grow. You may already know this, but if one of them does happen to die, since that sometimes happens w/ new crabs, be sure to take the dead one out of the cage because hermit crabs get freaked out if a companion dies...might also want to clean the cage really well in case it was sick.

Cute names by the way, lol

  3. well i have had 4 hermit crabs in my life they all do that that is like there natural habitat in the wild they do that as protection from predators  or it could be that it is just getting used to its new habitat
