Question:

Hermit crabs from the Gulf?

I went to the ocean today just south of Houston Texas. I found a few hermit crabs. I have a huge salt water tank back at home and I am planning on taking them back home and putting them into my tank.

Im curious what kind of hermit crab I have here. Its legs are not red or blue like the ones that I already have back home. The hermit crabs legs that I got from the ocean are kind of brown/white and the crab its self is quite big. Its about the size of a quarter or a bit bigger.

Anyone know anything about these crabs? Domestication? Size? Growth? Compatibility with my other crabs?

Thanks!

  1. They are just water hermits nothing different about them.

I will advise however having too many in a tank that does not have enough food will cause fights.

I do this with my tanks as well.

They love brine but will eat everything from algae to pellets etc.

    Just water hermits.

  2. I dont think you should take hermit crabs from the wild because it will cause them alot of stress and may kill them and will reduce the overall population. What if everyone took a few hermit crabs from the beaches. There would be none left. If you are planning on identifying, the best source is looking them up in a marine life book of your area.

  3. well i have hermit crabs that have are brown and white and there land hermit crabs, so unless you found them under the water they might be regular land hermit crabs, but i dont know if they live in beeches
