Hernan Marquez ready to take on Rodel Mayol in third WBA flyweight title defence - Boxing news
Hernan Marquez, the current WBA world flyweight champion, is all set and ready to enter the ring to defend his title for the third consecutive time against Rodel Mayol, the former WBC light flyweight champion, in a 12-round skirmish on March 24, 2012.
The bout will headline the ‘Clash of Champions: Mexico vs. Philippines’ pay-per-view which is being promoted and organised by the trio of Zanfer Promotions, Larsa Communications and Promoson. The ring for the event will be stretched at Centro de Usos Multiples
arena situated in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.
Marquez, also known as the ‘Tyson’, is ranked as the number two featherweight in the world and has been in a total 34 bouts. The young lad has won 32 of his total skirmishes and 25 of them by knockout. A glance at the stats and the level of opponents he
has nailed, shows that he is a talented, aggressive, and versatile pugilist.
This will be the 23-year-old Hernan’s third title defence and will be against an equally competent brawler, Rodel Mayol. Rodel has been in a total 37 bouts and came out victorious in 30. He has collected five losses and two draw decisions in his resume.
The 30-year-old Filipino has nailed 22 of his opponents by knockout and has also proudly held the WBO, WBC, and IBF light flyweight titles. Widely known as ‘Kid Rapido’ and ‘Batang Mandaue’, Rodel is currently on a four-bout win streak after his loss to
Omar Nino Romero.
Hernan has a clear upper hand over Rodel since he has fought and successfully defended his title against names that lie at the top ranks in the division. Marquez recently threw his title on the line against Luis Concepcion, the man from whom Hernan snatched
the gold in the first place.
In addition the young lad has collected his career’s only two losses against Nonito Donaire and Richie Mepranum, both considered as the best flyweights. One other thing that will aid Hernan in his third title-defence quest is the home town advantage. Rodel,
on the contrary, has not fought many big names but has a slight height advantage over the champion.
In a recent interview, Hernan the Mexican Tyson, commented, “I’ve done great training and had a good work plan that my trainer designed and we stuck to 100%. We’re just keeping our weight to avoid problems the day of weigh-in and then I’m eager to meet Rodel
Mayol.”
The bout will be a tooth and nail battle and Rodel will counter Hernan’s each and every jab effectively, if he overcomes his sluggishness that might hinder his performance against the more energetic and agile Marquez. The fight card is almost close to completion
and will also witness a skirmish between Juan Francisco Estrada and Richie Mepranum.
