Hero Women’s Indian Open: Becky Brewerton fires 69 in first round
Becky Brewerton of Wales stunned rivals in the first round of Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012 as she fired an impressive 69 on Friday.
Brewerton may not be one of the hot favourites for the Ladies European Tour (LET) event, being staged at the DLF Golf & Country Club, but she did much better than most of the top-ranked contenders.
The Welsh golfer started the round in amazing style as she fired a birdie on the first hole. She, however, could not keep a grip on her putter on the second hole and shot a bogey.
The LET star then parred the next three holes and amazed the Indian spectators by shooting an eagle on the par-5 6th hole. The eagle was enough to put her back on track, but she
seemed to be losing her momentum once again as she carded another bogey on the 7th hole.
Despite making lousy shots on the greens of some holes, Brewerton was not willing to let her nerve overcome her. She once again boosted her score by draining a birdie on the difficult par-3
8th.
On the back nine, her confidence remained strong but she carded two bogeys to dent her score. However, she was quick to atone for bad shots as she managed to sink three birdies on the 12th,
14th and 15th hole.
Commentators said that Brewerton has made a promising start, which means she will be expected to play a bit more aggressively in the last two rounds.
Commentators also pointed out that if the top-ranked stars such as defending champion Caroline Hedwall and Spanish Carlota Ciganda do not capitalise on course conditions on Friday, they could
be in big trouble in the final two rounds.
Other star performers of the first day also included Italian Stefania Croce, who fired a 69. According to incomplete results for the round, Croce appears to have gained a commanding position
over rivals and if she manages to keep the momentum going in the second round, she can put herself in a much stronger position going in the final round.
English Laura Davies, who won the 2010 edition of the tournament, shot a 71.
