Hero Women’s Indian Open: Carlota Ciganda relieved after absence of archrival Masson
Spanish Carlota Ciganda is one of the young guns who can shine at the upcoming Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012, slated to be staged from November 30th to December 2nd,
at the DLF Golf & Country Club, New Delhi, India.
Since the defending champion Caroline Hedwall and English Laura Davies won the last two events, things are looking grim for Asian contenders who were too strong to keep all their rivals down.
But rookies like Ciganda are also posing a serious threat to all the big names. Winning may be difficult for the young gun, but she has made no secret of her ambitions for this week, which
is to finish strong.
The Spanish star is being singled out as the strongest LET rookie not only because of current first position in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit, but also because of her appearance on an Indian
course for the first time ever.
More importantly, her archrival, Caroline Masson, is not taking part in the tournament, which has given Ciganda plenty of room and she will try to further improve her position on the money
list.
“For me it’s good that she’s not playing because she’s going to Q-School but there is still Dubai and a lot of money so if I don’t play well and she plays well,” Ciganda said of Masson’s absence
at the Hero Women’s Indian Open.
The rising star further said that despite her biggest rival being out of the upcoming tournament, she is not ready to feel complacent.
“She can beat me easily, so I’m going to think about this week and see how it goes”.
Since the launch of the Hero Women’s Indian Open in 2007, Asian contenders have capitalised on the favourable weather and course conditions, but losing the last two events signals more trouble
ahead.
Yani Tseng, who currently ranks number one in the Women’s World Golf Rankings and is the most accomplished golfer on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, won the 2007 edition
of the tournament.
Tseng then shifted her focus to the LPGA, and the baton was handed over to another key Asian star—Pornanong Phatlum of Thailand. Phatlum won the 2008 and 2009 edition of the tournament.
