Heurelho Gomes insists that red card against Inter Milan was too harsh
Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has said referee Damir Skomina was wrong to send him off against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, 20 October.
Gomes saw red against Inter after Wesley Sneijder played Jonathan Biabiany through on the right wing.
The Spurs keeper dove in for the ball, which was chipped over him, taking out Biabiany's body as the winger tried to pass the keeper.
"It's difficult for me to watch the game on TV after I was sent off. I think a red card from the referee is too much," Gomes said of the decision. "If he's given me a yellow card, that's OK. I didn't go to make a challenge, I went to save the ball."
Inter went 4–0 up in the first half, but Spurs fought back with a magnificent hat-trick by Gareth Bale in the second half. "It was a difficult game for us with 10 men, but the lads did OK," Gomes said of the rest of the game.
Spurs are now second in Group A with four points, three behind leaders Inter ahead of their return leg against the Italians at White Hart Lane on 2 November.
Manchester United await in the league
Another important fixture for Gomes' team is their league encounter with Manchester United on Saturday, 30 October, just three days prior to the game against Inter.
Despite their tough playing schedule, the Brazilian said he backs his team to perform against United before hosting the Champions League trophy-holders.
"They are still Manchester United and a big team, with big history. You need to go there full of confidence, but we know how difficult it is to play there. But, I believe in my team. I believe that in a great moment, you can make a great game there."
Spurs are currently fifth in the league with 15 points, two behind Manchester City, United and Arsenal, who all have 17 points. A win at Old Trafford would see them overtake Sir Alex Ferguson's team in the table.
