So... you have discovered that USB to firewire converter cables don't work. Stop trying.

You need to install a firewire 400 port in your computer - and use a real firewire cable. This would normally connect to the DV port of your camcorder - presuming it is a miniDV or digital8 tape based camcorder or one of the JVC higher-end consumer hard drive camcorders that also uses firewire.
