  1. Men play rugby league and sissy's play that other slow, soft boring c**p

  2. The easiest way to explain it - is by saying Rugby league is like rugby union, but without a proper contest for the ball, (rucks proper scrums and lineouts etc).

  3. RL =13 a side. Each team has 6 tackles to try and score., after each tackle ball is played through legs and play recommences. A Try is worth 4 points goal kick (penalty or conversion) =2 drop goal 1 point. If kicking the ball in open play ball has to bounce at least once no matter where you kick it from. No lineouts from kick to touch just a scrum. 4 substitutes that can interchange with players 12 times(in total) through the match.

Union 15 a side. Play carries on with possesion been taken & given throughout rucks & mauls are formed which does not exist in RL (these are complex and you'd need to read the rules on that) Ball is kicked for territory very often and thus giving possesion to opponents. Ball can be kicked straight into touch from Inside own 22 metre line. Lineouts when ball goes into touch.

A Try is worth 5 points penalty goal kick 3 conversion 2 drop goal 3 points

No interchange but players are subbed permanantly similar to soccer (unless blood injury which is temperary sub)

League was formed by Northern people who wanted payments to offset time lost at work, union was so called amatuer even though payments in kind were a normal part of the game.

Union banned all players coaches, managers from having anything to do with union (even coaching kids) if they had any link whatsoever with League.(until about 15 years ago)

League isn't like that and we let anybody participate.

The French Vichy disbanded French rugby league During WWII even though it was the more popular of the 2 sports

Of the two sports RL is simpler in it's rules and relies less on a referees subjective opinion of the rules. This results in lots of stop/starts in Union

RL is more about speed and ball handling skill,Union is more about territory and power at scrums, rucks and mauls.

AND No Webb Ellis was NOT the first to pick the ball up and run with it despite what people might say

  4. Both games are two different games and played very different.

In Rugby League there are 13 players.

The object is to advances the ball to score tries, while your opposition tries to stop you by tackling.

To do this they are given 5 tackles and once you’ll tackled, you must get up and play the ball by pushing it with the foot back between your legs to a team mates.

Once you’ve on your 5th tackle, you have three choices: 1) to go for it to score tries, 2) to go for better field position to keep their opposition in their own half, and 3) to kick and force your opposition to play at the ball to force a mistake hoping to regain procession.

Minor infringements like rugby union are resolved with the use of the scrums and in league the scrums is used rather than line outs, a total of 6 persons are used to form a scrum in league, in rugby union they normally use a total of 8.

The points system is also different; In Rugby league tries are only worth 4 points and a penalty and a drop goal is worth 2 points.

In Rugby Union There are 15 players and like league the object is to score tries; ‘well that the aim of it anyway.’

The opposition is to try and stop you by tackling you, but there are no tackle counts.

Instead a ruck or maul is formed where both you and your opposition push to either gain or to maintain procession of the ball.

They would continue this until tries are scored or points are made.

The point system is 5 points for a try and 3 points for a drop kick or a penalty. A conversion (a kick after a try) is worth 2 points both in Union and League.

Well, I hope this is of some help to you.

I have had the pleasure of playing both and I totally enjoyed it. My Saturdays used to consist of playing Rugby Union in the morning and Rugby League in the afternoon and as you can see they are totally different, so enjoy watching them both as they are both very great games.

  5. Rugby Union is an 80min game with approx. 25mins of ball in play action, mostly involving kicking the ball. The rest of the game involves various stoppages, such as penalties, lineouts or the ever exciting scrum and re-set scrum and re-set scrum. After any thrilling 2 or 3 min period of ball in play, the whole game is usually stopped for someone to lay on the ground getting a leg rub and their boots tied, for several mins. Playing one of these games a week is too taxing on the players, so  they play as little rugby as possible in the lead up to a World Cup, to prepare for the 'finals'.

Rugby League is also an 80min game, however there are far less stoppages and the ball is in play for more like 65min. The game involves great impact in the tackle, followed by the ball being played and the game continuing, rather than a messy scrap involving many players leading to a penalty. The game is far faster and more free flowing and the main goal is to actually score points through tries, unique idea. Players can be interchanged to maintain the intensity and unless  someone is seriously hurt, the ball is taken away and the game continues. It is not uncommon for top players to back up for their clubs 2 or 3 days after playing a rep game.

In summary league is fast and intense, whereas rugby is slow and boring.
