  1. I would, no question, but I live in rural Kentucky.  I seriously doubt there will be mass transit where I live during my lifetime.

  2. I most certainly would. And not to save a couple dollars at the gas pump, but to help the environment. One bus makes less pollution than an x number of automobiles.

  3. It would be impractical in my case.

For one thing the mass transit infrastructure in this state is pretty shoddy. Using mass transit would turn a 30 minute drive into 2.5 hours to go one way and involve walking a mile at either end.

I also have to run "panic" errands from work to a variety of different places. I'd need the have local bus and light rail schedule's memorized or research them prior to departure on each trip.

And have you ever tried getting 10' 2"x6" lumber onto a bus?

Having done all the math, if I were to take an airliner, packed to max capacity, all the people aboard would use less fuel than if they travelled individually. However, a 200 mile, round trip ticket on a budget airline such as Southwest, would cost about $300, compared to $90 in my Jeep Wrangler.

It would still take me about three hours to go Dallas to Austin or vice versa, and with a savings of $200, it's cheaper to drive.

Having just checked the Greyhound Schedules, the same trip would take an hour longer and cost $147.50. (Which doesn't count the effort and expense in getting to the terminal downtown, or from downtown Austin to my destination, or the return trip.)

So, for a $45 each way, and 3 hours each way, I can drive.

For $300, round trip, five hours each way, I can fly. For $147.50, round trip, (not counting the cost of metro bus fares,) I can make the trip in 8 hours each way.

I can afford $90 in fuel and six hours commuting much more readily than I can the available options.

  4. sure

  5. Any drop in price would be temporary, as people would start driving again after the prices dropped.

    Translation: waste of time.

  6. I take Mass Transit in NY-NJ all times, including Philly.

If i go to other states, I do definitely take Mass Transit because I LOVE TO EXPLORE THE TRANSIT SYSTEM!!

  7. I'd take mass transit, but we'd have to get other transportation technologies, like paved roads.

I live so far out in the middle of nowhere, that the cost of routing some type of mass transit system would be astronomical.

  8. I have tried mass transit once.

Where I live in FL it is the bus and it sucks...it took 4 transfers and over 2 hours each way.

Where I live they have no subway or high speed trains. Many times over the years they have talked about it but nothing ever became of it.

Other countries..Germany, Russia and a lot of European countries have passed us in leaps and bounds with mass transportation solutions(subway and high speed trains) We sadly lag behind!

Maybe someday the US will wake up and see the demand for this is needed?

Until then I'm not taking 4 hours or more every day from my life because of the gas prices, sorry.

My better half did buy a motorcycle a few years ago and his gas costs and mileage are awesome.
