Question:

Hey Animal Welfare people! How do you poignantly describe back yard breeders?

I've been wanting to blog on myspace about backyard breeders and how they effect the pet overpopulation problem. (like to include some stats about euthanasia) I'd also like to include how one can tell the difference between a "good breeder" and a byb. I am stuck and any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

  1. BYB - stick two dogs regardless of age breed temperament health etc together and lets them breed

Reputable breed - provides health guarantee, health test and screens parents active in their local and/or national breed club. Show their dogs, willing to take any animal back for whatever reason throughout the life of the animal. Sell on spay neuter contracts or limited registration. No mutt only purebreds No more than 2 breeds and on average 1-3 litters per year depending on the number of adult dogs. Th dogs are a part of the family first breeders second. They ask the buyer questions about their lifestyle puppy needs to try and make the best match as possible. Provide registration papers when the animal is picked up or delivered unless otherwise stated.

  2. I once saw a table that showed the difference between a miller, back yard breeder, and reputable breeder..  let me find that for you!

    Ah here we go!

Obviously "commercial breeder" and "puppy mill" are basically the same thing.

Hobby breeder is more along the lines of a reputable breeder who is new to breeding responsibly, or new to the breed..  or someone who just only breeds on occasion.

  3. I think this website will give you some good information.

In terms of how I would describe byb's? I don't think I can say it without getting a violation from yahoo.

  5. It might not be poignant, but its direct and to the point -

Back yard breeders have as little intelligence as the poorly bred progeny of their hideously disgusting dogs do! Their blaze attitude about their lack of respect for all life and their praise of the almighty dollar decimates more dogs lives daily than all medical disorders dogs are susceptible to combined. And while I'm mentioning medical disorders, the poor pups they are cranking out will most undoubtedly fall prey to a whole host of congenital birth defects, that is if they make it past weaning age. Those lucky enough to be purchased and taken from that environment usually wind up with equally dim witted folks who can't believe what a steal their precious, aggressive, cute, snaggle toothed, hunch backed dog was. And their life is an even more horrific trial in patience as they usually don't receive top notch vet care, as I believe all animals are entitled to.

If you are looking for euthanasia stats, go to HSUS.org. There are a lot of researched stats about domestic and wild animals there.

  6. good breeders are registered with the akc or the ckc in Canada.

They also make sure the conditions are better and they don't just sell to any yahoo with money.

  7. Here's a website with lots of articles/charts about "good" versus "bad" breeders. Perhaps it may be of help.
