  1. to my knowledge ... the earliest arrival of an ancestor of mine was in 1838 .. he arrived as an 18 yr old convict and was apparently a *gentleman*( because he could read and write)... he lived to be old age passing away in 1904.

many of my other ancestors ( on both my parent's side ) came out in 1852 ( was an influx of immigration) ... some were highland cattle people, some were labourers... but they were all free settlers.

    EDIT:

Ummm lol yeah I must concur with others who have answered .. there are a great many aussies who do not have UK heritage.. infact I may be one of the rare ones these days that ONLY have UK heritage ( d**n it!! lol .... even my husband and therefore daughter have germanic heritage)

  2. And what makes you think my ancestors are from the UK?

I think you'd btter go and learn about Australia's history before you make those ill-informed generalisations.

My ancestry is Chinese, Thai and Portugeuse.

    Cheers

  3. I am indigenous so my relos didn't come from the UK. You left out a whole group there without even knowing it, have a good one.

  4. Wish I knew - very hard to find out genealogy here in Tassie, as they had a big fire some years ago which burnt a lot of the records.  I do know that some of them came out mid 1800's and owned land as free settlers but would love to find a convict in my past.

  5. My relatives came in about 1800. They weren't convicts - they actually came from England as teachers to work in the schools here.
