I have question about how Americans think.

Think about this situation.

In Japan I heard that Americans are very clear about YES and NO.

So, I tried to be clear and be honest myself.

One of my class mate at my Univ asked me, "Do you like the states?"" and I answerd, "well, Usa is kinda boring"( again, this is my honest answer). Cuz I thought I supposed to be clear.

but, he said so why did you come here and was kinda.. upset.

I am wrong?? Did I supposed to lie about myself and say I love here so much??

This is about cluture you know.

Are Americans really clear about YEs and No??

  1. u should of lied these r armerican there stupid they don't no much about other country's

  2. well some people are rude. Some lie. Some use tact. It's not the Americans it's that particular American at that time.

  3. I don't think your answer was wrong. Like you said it is about culture, what may be boring to you is not to some. Like anything else in life you have to be open to really experience the differences in culture. If not it is apt to be boring to anyone.

Actually your answer was neither yes or no, it was more of an undecided answer.

  4. lol

  5. Well, you actually answered exactly how (almost) every Japanese does.... ambiguously. You are not clear at all. The question is a "yes or no" type of question. You didn't answer it, you gave a generalization of what you think about it, not whether you like it or not. When i lived in Japan, I could never get a yes or no from many people. It's the way your society is. you avoid conflict... which i think is a good practice. But all you did is make your classmate angry because you confirmed the fact you don't answer questions in the affirmative or negative....

it's funny how some people stereotype others... Like Americans don't know about other countries.... I lived in japan for 10 years, i lived in the Philippines for 1 year, I lived in Singapore for 1 year, I lived in Guam for 1 year, I lived in Hawaii for 4 years, I lived in Italy for 5 years..... And I was born and raised in Detroit, and now live in Florida..... But i don't know anything about other peoples countries....

  6. Lol. Americans are very patriotic. Me & my friens came over from the UK last summer & we found it quite boring aswell. When people asked one of my very forthcoming friends how she was finding America, she was very blunt & told them she wasn't enjoying it much. The Americans did not like it at all. You should have seen some of there face like they would have a heart attack or faint. It was very amusing to say the least.

Americans have a lot of pride in there country, there not like the rest of the world who are happy to hear exactly what you really think of their country & take it with a pinch of salt.

Im pretty sure if you had said "No" instead of "well US is kinda boring" & been clear with your answer you would have got the same response from your class mate.

He still would have said "so why did you come here". What he wanted to hear was a "Yes" or even if you didnt say yes it wouldn't have mattered to him as long as it was a positive response. Trust me.

So all this you didnt say "yes" or "no" is irrelevant.

  7. often time one must lie or at least stretch the truth to protect somebody from getting their feelings hurt
