1) A 14-ft. piece of wire is strung between a building and the ground, making a 30-60-90 triangle.

a) How far straight out from the base of the building is the wire attached to the ground?

b) How far up the side of the building is the wire attached?

2) Which of the following expressions represent the total volume of the cylinder? There is more than one correct expression. The base of the cylinder is 50 cm squared, and the height of the cylinder is 4 cm. The three expressions are:

a) 50(9-5) I figured out that this is one of the right answers except I can't find the other correct expression

b) 50(5+4)

c) 50x5+50x4 50x5x4

3) Write each of the following expressions in two different but equivalent forms.

a) 7x(3-9x)

b) 15x+8x^2

c) (5x^2-x+7)+4x(3+5x)

d) (450-8a+7b)-3(5a-2b)

e) (2x+3) (5x-7)

4) How do you make a number line graph based on the answer to 14<8x-2?

5) How do you make a box-and-whisker plot/box plots?

Thanks so much!

  1. 1) This depends on where each angle is...if the 30 degree angle is along the bottom or if it is the 60 degree angle. I will go with the 60 degree angle on the bottom...if that is wrong, switch the order of the answers.

    a) Half of the hypotenuse...so 7 feet.

    b) The length of the short leg times the square root of 3...so 7sqrt3 feet.

    2) I do not see another correct answer as they are written.

    3) I'm not sure what they want...but:

    a) 7x(3-9x)

    21x-63x^2

    b) 15x+8x^2

    x(15+8x)

    c) (5x^2-x+7)+4x(3+5x)

    5x^2-x+7+12x+20x^2

    25x^2 + 11x + 7

    d) (450-8a+7b)-3(5a-2b)

    450 - 8a + 7b - 15a + 6b

    -23a + 13b + 450

    e) (2x+3) (5x-7)

    10x^2 - 14x + 15x - 21

    10x^2 + x - 21

    4) 14<8x-2

    16<8x

    2<x

Draw a number line. At 2, draw an open circle. Since x needs to be bigger than that, draw a line to the right of the open circle.

    5) Find the following from the data:

    minimum

    maximum

    median

    Quartile 1 (Q1)

    Quartile 3 (Q3)

Draw a number line that has enough room for all of these points.

Draw a short vertical line (bar) at Q1, median and Q3. Add a top and bottom to complete the "box" part.

Draw a dot at the maximum and minimum points. Connect these dots to the box for the "whiskers".

    Hope that helps!
