Do these fish breed easily? And Can I just get 1 platy with the neon's?

And are there any sucker fish that only get to like 4 inches because I only have a 10 gallon tank? Oh and how can I tell male platy from female?

  1. yes, both of those types of fish will breed easily if a male and female of each are in there. you definitely want more than 1 platy, they are a schooling fish, so getting at least 3 would be your best bet, probably 5 neon tetra and 3 platys.

  2. Maybe try getting...

    3 neon tetra

    2 platy

    1 small sucker fish.

  3. You could get all male platies, and you wouldn't have to worry about the breeding. If you get slightly bigger fish though, the fish will be most likely to eat the fry (sometimes livebearers even eat their own babies), so you wouldn't have to worry about it. I'm sure neon tetras would go for the fry, but since they're so tiny it would take a while for them to take care of all it. In the weird case your fish don't get an appetite for yummy fry snacks, you can always bring it to a pet store and sell it as feeder fish. :)

As far as sucker fish, you could get otocinclus catfish, they do a GREAT job of taking care of algae. You could get three of them, since they feel more comfortable than being alone. I wouldn't suggest a Pleco, because even Bristlenoses, who stay under 6" and are great at algae, need at least a 30 gallon tank.

  4. That sounds like the perfect amount of fish for a ten gallon tank.

If you want a little suckerfish that still gets the job done, I would get a chinese algae eater.  They sell those at most pet stores.

I have never had neons breed before in my tanks, and platys will breed pretty easily.

The person working at the petstore should be pretty easily able to tell you which platys are males and females.  If you want more than one platy, but no breeding, just get two males or two females.

  5. why don't you just get 9 neon tetras you don't have to worry about babies too much and get 1 little snail problem solved

  6. Well i'm not positively sure but I think the bristle nosed pleco stays relatively small compared to the common pleco.

You can tell hte male from female by the anal fin as shown here:

  7. 6 Neon Tetras and 2 MALE platies should be fine for a 10 gallon tank. Platies breed easily if there's a male and female. Yes, it's ok to just get 1 Platy with the Neon Tetras.

Male platies will have a gonopodium, which is a rod-shaped fin as shown here: http://photobucket.com/albums/bb53/evely...

Females will have a fan-shaped anal fin as shown here: http://photobucket.com/albums/bb53/evely...

Otocinclus are your best choice for an algae eater. They only grow up to an inch or 2 long. Here's some websites about them: http://www.otocinclus.com/
