Hey, I LOVE riding street and I'm getting a custom frame built by Dobermann so I'm trying to figure out what exactly I'm getting.I love 24s but I 'm not sure if my size-to-bike size ratio would be funky or something. Can anyone help me with this?

  1. If I understand your question correctly, you intend to ride a mountain bike on the street, and you want to know what wheel size would be appropriate for you.

    Is that correct?

With your height, you could be riding a 29" or 29er as they call it. Don't go any smaller than 26" wheels. The only reason for someone like you to be on a 24" is if you were racing a BMX cruiser.

  2. You can do either one.....just be sure to get some bomber wheels that will handle abuse.   Theoretically, a 24" wheel is stronger, but excellent 26" wheels will do just fine.

Also, I'm supposing that the frame has the uni brake mounts to take both 24" and 26" wheels, right?   Or disc tabs, in which case it won't matter.

If you go for 24", look into a set of Halo SAS wheels.  There are lots of others, but Halo makes a kick-butt rim that will hold you.   (They make them in 26" too, of course....and any bike shop in the country can order them for you from US distributors.)

If you're riding mtb cranks, get a Raceface downhill bottom bracket or a Funn.  The Funn has 4 bearings....it's heavy but so far it's outlasted every other bottom bracket I've used for urban drops on a hardtail.

Hope this helps.....if you need more just post up.
