  1. I think that the writer is suggesting that Hitchcock felt that his guests came, not for him, but for the ritual of the ceremony and his behaviour was consistent with his contempt for them.  Hitchcock, genius though he was, was a bit of a sicko.


  2. I would say he was greeting people with a fake smile and expressing words that did not mean what he was saying. Its like being sociable to someone but not in to it. He was saying nice to see you but did not really mean it.

  3. He was forcing a lie.
