  1. Ptolemy's legacy was his theory that the Earth was at the center of the Universe and everything else revolved around it. For 1,500 years it was generally accepted by both western scientific and religious authorities but by the time Nikolas Kopernik, otherwise known as Copernicus there was a great deal of evidence against Ptolemy's Earth centered theory. For more than 1,000 years, the Roman Catholic Church regarded Ptolemy's theory as the last word, and contradicting it came at great personal risk. Copernicus' observations of the motions of the planets, moon and Sun led to his discovery that the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun. He waited until he was near death to publish his work in 1543, which was the death knell of the Ptolemaic model of the Universe. By the time Galileo began turning his telescopes to the heavens, Copernicus' theory won out.

  2. ptolemy developed the geocentric modle of the solarsystem.

  3. He is known for having stated that the Earth was the center of the solar system - the Ptolemic or Geocentric System. According to his theory, since the Earth was inhabited by thinking individuals, it must be in the center of the universe and the other heavenly bodies revolved around it.

  4. He was Greek astronomer who lived in Alexandria, Egypt in the 2nd century AD.

He developed a detailed mathematical theory to predict the movement of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars using the Earth centered model of the universe.

That theory was published in a book known as the "Almagest"

Although his model can be seen now as contrived, and even a non-astronomer can see the holes in it, his system was good at its time because it accurately accounted for the movement of the heavens, so good in fact, that it remained the principal astronomical theory until the 1500s when Copernicus came along and changed it to a Sun-centered universe (again) which seemed obvious to all.

Just for info, the Greek astronomer Aristarchos had used a Sun-centered universe 5 centuries before Ptolemy but it was scorned and then forgotten until Ptolemy came along.

    Hope that helps you.

  5. Says here he was an astronomer and geographer.
