I'm talking early part of career - age 25 to 35. Is it better to work for an organization like the UN, IMF or NATO at very much an entry level or even in an administrative/secretarial/support capacity from 24-27or to get a master or arts (MA)? I'm looking at it from the perspective of what works best in terms of salary, staying out of debt, attractiveness to future employers (early career), networking etc. Get the experience even at entry level, or get the schooling?

  1. Both.  It's extremely difficult to get entry level at places like the UN, IMF, or NATO.  I would highly suggest Peace Corps (if you are American) as it's an overseas experience that is HIGHLY regarded by all major NGOs and gov't institutions and you should get a Master's (which you can also do through Peace Corps).

  3. Yeah, this isnt really a which one as is more of a both.  You are going to need experience and education.  My recommendation would be to do both at the same time.  Go get your master's degree (MA is fine) but see if you can get into a program that allows you to take internships for credit.  Go work at an NGO or other international organization that will basically let you work there for free.  In this field, its really hard to get paid at all unless you have proven yourself.  Without having both education and experience, it is going to be difficult to get these places to even recognize you.  It may cause you to go into debt in order to get these things accomplished, but if you really want this career this is what you will need to gear yourself towards.
