  1. idk, but i'm guessing it's that the men are more popular (thats just a guess) and then it could be that men have always been more dominant (not to offend any women, thats just how history reads it).

  2. The men get larger crowds and tv contracts thus the monetary issue equates to more money for them.

  3. I am betting if the LPGA promoted Natalie Gulbis on the TV all the time, their ratings would be higher thus the purses higher.  I know a lot of women out there would scream at me for saying it, but there is a reality in this world.  That reality is that s*x sells.  You may or may not agree with me (and I did not write the rules so please do not come after me for saying it) but there are some very attractive female golfers out there that I am sure could become a huge draw if the LPGA promoted that way.  Of course then the integrity of the game is lost.  So what do you want, larger purses or continued quality tournaments with competitive golf?

  4. a unimportant mens tourney has about the same purse as a womens major tourney. that is after many of the womens majors had large increases in their purses. an average womens tourney has about a 4,000,000 purse and men is about 6,000,000

  5. More men play, watch and buy golf shows/equipment. Thus... the sponsors will cater more to the mens tournaments than the womens.

  6. there are more sponsers in mens golf due to the success of tiger woods bringing the masses to the golf scene. thats why mens purses are higher.

  7. Sad but true it is an issue of funding.  Funding of course is related to sponsorships which depend on viewers/ticket sales.  The men's tour simply draws more and therefore has a higher value to sponsors and advertisers.

To my knowledge tennis is the only sport that has actively pursued equality of prize money at the majors.  I think golf could follow the USTA/ITF's lead on this issue.

  8. Yes absolutely there is, although a reasonable part of that is due to Tiger (since his arrival of tour purse money has nearlt tripled.

As an example, the top money winner for the 07 PGA Tour, Tiger Woods, earned $10,867,052 and the median player made $743,305. On the 07 LPGA Tour the top money winner, Lorena Ochoa, earned $4,364,994.00 and the median earner made $81,412.00.

  9. As with any professional sport, the amount the players have the opportunity to earn for their skills is directly proportional to the amount of interest in their sport by the general public.

Men's golf is more fun to watch for most people.  The more people watch the sport, the more the corporate sponsors are willing to shell out the big bucks to make the purses bigger and bigger.

  10. Each tournamnet wants to have the biggest prize it can to get the best players.  Prize money comes from the sponsors, ticket sales, TV rights etc.  More men play and watch golf on TV than women so advertisers are willing to pay more to advertise on a men's tournament.  So a men's tournament has an easier time raising more money - thus bigger prizes.

  11. Because the purses are bigger in the men's tournaments?

  12. It has to do with the fan base. On average, more men watch golf/sports than women. This equates into television ratings, larger advertising budgets, and big-name sponsorships. The sheer amount of money dumped into a men's tournament  fuels bigger purses compared to those found on the LPGA tour. Bigger purses means more money earned by the golfers involved.

I tried to find a comparison in life where women commonly earn more for doing the same act. Except for jobs in the s*x trade, I simply could not find a fair simile. It's a rather pathetic but true exposure of the respect women recieve in this world.

    Hope this helps.
