1. Hey great question....my son is 14 and we are planning on moving abroad in a year or so....good to learn about education system!

  2. Well I teach high school in NZ so I can answer that question. In NZ we have a new system called NCEA where any given class is worth 24 credits and students must gain 80 credits a year for three years (years 11 to 13) in order to get the NCEA qualification and go to university.

Students earn credits thru a combination of internally assessed projects and papers (teacher assigned and graded) and external exams at the end of the year. Students are assessed on "standards" so each exam or project tests a specific skill. For example, Year 13 History students are asked to Conduct a Historical Inquiry by creating a text book chapter on a historical subject the teacher assigns. These standards aren't graded, they are simple achieved/not achieved (pass/fail) and regardless of how well students do, if they pass they get all the available credits. There are Merit and Excellence awarded but they don't give any extra credits.

The main difference in the NZ school system, compared to other countries, is that the focus is on teaching critical thinking skills rather than rote memorisation of knowledge. The exams test students' analysis skills and often avoid the subject matter taught. So students in World War I history aren't asked any questions about World War I in their exam. Also not having grading, no A, B, C, D etc. is a major difference in the NZ system.

The university system is very similar to the UK and US and does have the normal grading system. Most Bachelor's Degrees are 3 years and courses are taught with large lectures with over a hundred students and smaller tutorial groups of 15 or so students meeting between lectures.

In NZ they have Primary School (years 1-6) and High School (7-12) after that you can go to tafe, or uni for a selected profession\career.
