  1. Just make sure you are surfing larger 4-5 foot steep waves not little longboarding waves.

  2. transitioning can be super difficult. i transitioned from a 7'8 to a 6'2 and it was a lot harder than i had expected

okayy you need to make sure you have ur pop ups down

cuz with shortboards like that ur feet dangle off the surfboard soo you dont have the luxury of have ur feet helping you

basically ur gunna need to use all ur abs

and also when you go to pop up you most likely need to position ur hands differently

    instead on the rails

you need  to put ur hands on the deck of ur surfboard

    good luck!

    hope i helped

  3. ok, you're pretty light and with the board having some width to it you should be fine just remember to stand up as quickly as possible and as soon as you feel the wave has taken over because it is much harder to stand up once you are already going down the wave. stick with it and you'll get it.

  4. Well, you've just done the equivalent of learning to drive moms automatic transmission minivan to driving a Porsche.  It's gonna take some time to figure it out, whole different world.

  5. when you pop of make sure its 1 quick motion and no knees!! dont try to balance before u stand up just pop up then catch your balance and and for instance if ur just going down the line make sure u get right into that movement and good luck

  6. Its going to take a while for you to get the feel of the board. your going to have trouble standing up on a new board, especially from when your going down board lengths. you cant get up on your knees at all and just pop up as fast as you can. Don't hesitate. Also, if your really having trouble with it, do not get frustrated. Confidence is key to surfing. so stay confident and don't give up.

  7. Practice. You need time in the water. You will get the hang of it sooner or later, just like you did on the funboard, but you have your work cut out for you. get off the computer and go surfing!

When I started surfing in the 60's, we all rode longboards. During the short board revolution, we all went to shorter and shorter boards every summer. There was always a 'break in period' where it took some time to get the feel of the new shorter stick, so just be patient, you'll get it.
