  1. Perhaps you're referring to the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which is a required test used by all branches.  You take the test before you join, and it helps determine what jobs you are eligible for within the service.  The test is the same for all branches, but the army has the lowest minimum passing grade, 31 (on a scale of 0 to 99), while the Air Force has the highest,  36.  Once you join, all of the branches have different testing and promotion methods.

  2. With regards to recruitment you will need to take a test for all branches called the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery ).

Your scores in four critical areas -- Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge (see below) -- count towards your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT score determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.

Your scores in the other areas of the ASVAB will determine how qualified you are for certain military occupational specialties and Enlistment Bonuses. A high score will improve your chances of getting the specialty/job and signing bonus you want.

So consider that the Navy and the Air Force both work with advanced technical systems. For a lot of their positions, you will need to score higher than with the Army and Marines (this is a broad statement so you need to understand that the Army and Marine brances also have some technical positions available, just not as many).

  3. Test for what? Promotion?

In the army we dont have written test like the Air Force, but you do have to go to A Promotion Board for SGT and SSG.

  4. The Coast Guard is actually the highest at 42 AND you need to qualify for an A School (42 doesn't always do that).
