  1. I have never heard the term "state nation." A "state" is term for an entity with political sovereignty over a geographic area. A "nation" is a population which shares linguistic, cultural, and historical backgrounds. A "nation state" is when the two coincide. You could say when the political boundaries on the map accurately reflect the populations.

    To give examples, the US is a state, but not a nation. The Cherokee are a nation but not a state. Portugal is a nation state.
